Sidewalk Repair Program Begins in Highland Park

Los Angeles City Council approved the program's funding in March to help in the immediate repair of the sidewalks in Council District 14.

Council District 14 began its first concrete pour Tuesday to make walkways more accessible to the public.

The program is a part of the Clean Communities Initiative, whose goals include fixing the district's worst sidewalks.

Councilman Jose Huizar allocated $500,000 in discretionary funds to combine with existing city funded services to support the $1.5 initiative. He said this improvement is a start, and there should be more funding for sidewalk repairs in other districts.

After the funding was approved, Councilmember Huizar said "$250,000 is not a lot of money to address our huge problem...but what I want to in my council district is to start the process because we can't wait any longer."

Residents said in the past, elderly citizens have had trouble with the uneven sidewalks and could barely access the senior center.
