Workers Memorial Week

Local workers remember those who have died due to unsafe working conditions.

The Council for Occupational Safety and Health (COSH) remembered workers who have died due to unsafe working conditions. This event Monday was part of Workers' Memorial Day, an international reminder of the deadly consequences of hazardous work conditions. Local residents held up photographs of loved ones who have been hurt or injured on the job.

Organizers say that there are approximately 5,000 deaths of workers annually as a result of unsafe working conditions, nearly 500 of which occur in California. Additionally, nearly 50,000 workers die each year as a result of prolonged illnesses contracted through unsafe conditions.

Jorge Cabrera, event organizer, says COSH wants to put pressure on city officials to ensure safer working conditions. They hope that a change in these policies will prevent worker deaths in the future.
