May Day Marchers Call for Immigration Reform
Hundreds marched through downtown Los Angeles on Thursday to raise awareness about immigration reform as part of the annual May Day protests.
Protesters called on the federal government to end the record-high number of deportations, mandate a living wage and provide a pathway to citizenship to undocumented immigrants.
May 1st is known as International Workers' Day, or May Day. The annual march commemorates the Haymarket affair in 1886, when violence broke out during a protest for the 8-hour workday.
Thursdays protests required several downtown streets to close down, including Broadway between 11th and Temple streets, Hill and Spring streets between Olympic and 1st streets. Traffic in nearby streets was expected to be higher than usual.
