National Voter Registration Day Kicks Off at USC
USC’s Unruh Institute of Politics held a National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) celebration with guest speakers, entertainment, and free food and prizes in Hahn Plaza in order to encourage Trojans to register to vote.
At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, students gathered in front of Tommy Trojan to hear from guest speakers like the executive director of Unruh, Dan Shnur, LA City Commissioner Mike Davis, California Republican National Committeeman Shawn Steel, and Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer.
According to the invitation, the focus of this event is to bring together volunteers, organizations, and public service professionals to create awareness of voter registration opportunities.
In 2010, only 20 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds voted in the midterm elections. A fourth of young people did not even register to vote for the 2010 elections because they were not informed and missed the registration deadline, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. According to Carryonvote.com, only 15.4 percent of eligible young voters actually voted in the 2012 election.
The NVRD celebration was created in collaboration with the USC College Republicans, USC College Democrats, Undergraduate Student Government, Asian Pacific American Student Assembly, USC Program Board, Political Stuent Assembly, Asian Pacific American Student Services, and the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics.
