Apple Releases New iPad Air and Mini

Only 5 weeks after iPhone 6 release, Apple releases the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc., took the stage in Cupertino, CA this morning to release some of Apple’s newest products and software.

The first-generation iPad Air was thinner than a pencil. “How can we get better than that?” asked Cook. He showed a video of a pencil that was cut by a laser by almost a quarter, and then compared that side by side with the new iPad. It is slightly thinner than a pencil, sitting at 6.1mm, 18% thinner than the first iPad air. The iPad Air 2 now has bragging rights as the world’s thinnest tablet.

The device features a new 8MP iSight camera with 1080p HD video capability that allows for slo-mo videos, a feature that was previously specific to the iPhone, and 64MP panorama pictures.

The iPad Air 2 also incorporates touch ID and the new 64-bit A8X processor.

Apple also released the iPad Mini 3, which features a 7.9 inch retina display, a 5MP iSight camera, and Touch ID.

Craig Federighi, the senior vice president of Software Engineering at Apple, also took the stage to release the new OS X 10 Yosemite software for Mac users.

Yosemite features a new Safari browser and the ability to make phone calls from your Mac.

Federighi also introduced Continuity, a new software feature that allows users to move seamlessly between all of their Apple devices.

Over 225 million iPads have been sold worldwide, which is more than any other tablet on the market. But according to Gartner, a technology research and advisory firm, iPad sales are only expected to increase by 11%, compared at a 55% increase last year.

“It’s transforming the way we work, we learn, we play, and it’s transforming the way we communicate,” said Cook.

The iPad Air 2 starts at $499 for 16 GB while the iPad Mini 3 starts at $399 for 16GB.

For users that have access to the latest Safari browser, you can watch the live stream here.
