MLS Commissioner Unveils New Los Angeles Soccer Team
Things are about to change for soccer fans in Los Angeles.
In a press conference Thursday, MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced the formation of a new team, the Los Angeles Football Club, which will debut in 2017.
Garber said the MLS is also committed to bringin a new stadium for the team to play.
Team members and management have yet to be announced.
The LAFC team's owners include famous athletes and entrepreneurs.
Former Lakers star Magic Johnson, Youtube Co-Founder Chad Hurley and soccer legend Mia Hamm Garciaparra are among the owners.
“This visionary ownership group will chart a course that will further elevate the sport in this great city and, combined with a new state-of-the-art stadium, accelerate us down the path toward becoming one of the top soccer leagues in the world," said Garber.
The new football club announcement comes three days after the MLS disbanded the struggling Chivas USA that has played in L.A. for 10 years.
Chivas USA soccer player Felix Borja tweeted to fans that he was thankful for their 10 seasons of unconditional support.
