Teens Sails Toward Life Lessons

A free program teaches teens how to sail on tall ships in San Pedro.  ATVN's Faith Miller spoke to the young sailors about riding the high seas.

Local teens in Southern California are learning how to sail tall ships in San Pedro, while learning about themselves.

"It's helped me grow a lot," student Aaron Kagon said. "I used to not be a leader when I first started. Now I'm pretty confident leading a group."

Kagon and other teens say learning how to sail has taught them leadership skills and to confront their own fears. Colby Smith, a youth crew organizer, says sailing teaches students a different way of thinking.

"These kids kind of take that direction and that order, the consistency, into their own lives, realizing that to get something done you have to have a game plan, you have to have some sort of system on how to accomplish those goals."
