Are USC Students Prepared to Vote in Midterm Elections?
The ever-active USC student body may not be as active in this year's midterm elections. Many students, in fact, did not even know that midterm elections were tomorrow.
A poll conducted by USC Dornsife indicates that forty-two percent of all likely voters consider education their top priority. The same poll predicts that propositions 1, 2, and 47 are expected to pass easily, while 45 and 46 are projected to fail. With some USC students set to miss out on voting, it'll be interesting to see if those predictions stand.
Speaking to students, we found that some students haven't registered to vote, some don't know how to register or where to even vote.
For example, with a student body comprised of so many out-of-state students, there's natural confusion on how to vote.
"A lot of times if they are from another state or different town, they'll get sent absentee ballots," said Paige Brenner, director of campus affairs for USG. "They're not really sure how those work or what you're voting for so a lot of times it's hard to get students out to the polls."
At the same time, other students like Andrew Bergman struggle to balance school, all their activities and stay on top of politics and elections.
"For me personally I'm so swamped with school work, so I'm not really paying attention and it's not really something that people talk about to begin with. So I'm not really aware," said Bergman.
USC will have voting booths at Harris Hall, Parkside, Caruso Catholic Center. Harris Hall and Parkside are on campus and Caruso is just north of campus near Troy Hall.
Voting booths tomorrow open at 6:30 a.m and will go on for most of the day until 9:00 p.m.
