LA City Workers Walk Out On The Job
City workers walked out on the job in over 60 places across the city Tuesday. They are in contract negotiations with the city and feel there's not enough support for the workers.
Members of the Service Employees International Union and Fix L.A. gathered at Dockweiler State Beach to talk about how few workers there are to keep the city's beaches and waters safe and clean. This is the seventh month of these negotiations and many workers feel the city isn't moving fast enough.
Mayor Eric Garcetti wants to freeze bonuses and have employees contribute to the cost of health care. But Stacee Karny, a chemist at the Hyperion Treatment Plant, thinks Garcetti's plan in unnecessary. "It is our leader’s jobs to protect workers in the community rather than require us to make more sacrifices. Enough is enough," she said.
Garcetti responded to the protesters saying that while there is movement in the negotiations, they still have a long way to go. "Even if the economy is coming back, we still have more expenses than we have revenues, so we have to think creatively about how to save money," he said.
