Attending School As A Homeless Child

Getting a good education as a homeless child isn't easy. ATVN's Stassy Olmos tells the story of one girl who beat the odds.

While the biggest worries for many high school students are their SATs and college applications, Angela Sanchez had to worry about getting back to her homeless shelter by 5pm and having all her homework done by lights out.

Sanchez's experience is not uncommon. Los Angelels has 67,000 homeless children attending schools within the county, according to the Homeless Consultant for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. That's 22% of the entire population of homeless children in the nation.

With the help of a tutor from the nonprofit School On Wheels, Sanchez was able to overcome her circumstances. She now attends UCLA as a grad student and is dedicating her life to helping other children struggling with homelessness attend college.
