USC Ex-Coach Steve Sarkisian Sparks Conversation On Alcoholism

While some are ignoring Sark's rumored alcohol problem, students share stories of their struggles with addiction.

The warning signs were there when former USC football coach Steve Sarkisian appeared to be drunk at the Salute To Troy event in August.

This may have been his first cry for help - a cry that seemed to be ignored until this weekend, when Pat Haden said he recognized that Sark was "not healthy."

Haden's word choice is raising questions about why he isn't coming out and saying that Sarkisian may be dealing with an alcohol problem.

Dr. Shannon Madeya said that by avoiding the topic, Haden may be adding to the stigma surrounding alcoholism - which can effect people suffering from addiction.

"The stigma is around because of the old myth that addiction is a choice," she said.

USC students have their own home a way from home to seek recovery right here on campus. The Haven is a sober living community for Trojans. They have a community space for students in the United University Church on campus, and sober living spaces at Gateway.
