Vicki Chen

Class of 2013, Bachelor's

Vicki Chen is an award-winning journalist with a passion for breaking news, political reporting and international affairs.

You can catch her on the air as a reporter for ATVN's Monday newscast. As a one-woman-band, she writes, shoots, edits and enterprises her own stories. She also works behind-the-scenes as a producer for the Wednesday newscast. She publishes regularly on ATVN.org and delivers important breaking news via social media. You can follow her on Twitter @vchen24.

This is Vicki's seventh and final semester at ATVN, where she has covered local, national and international news. Some of her most memorable reports include the first campus shooting in USC history, the first-ever strike by Walmart workers and live reporting during the 2012 presidential and 2013 Los Angeles primary elections.

Since August 2009, Vicki has worked a variety of positions at ATVN, including news anchor, web producer, multimedia journalist, art director, graphics artist, assignment desk editor and audio playback operator.

Vicki is also an executive producer at Neon Tommy, USC's 24/7 digital news site and the number one university-level publication with more than 4 million visitors to the site per year. At Neon Tommy, Vicki aggregates and writes news articles about local, national and international news. She also oversees the front page and promotes content on Twitter and Facebook. You can see her work here.

In the summer of 2012, Vicki worked for the U.S. Department of State at the Washington Foreign Press Center. She worked with embassies worldwide to provide logistical support for journalists reporting from the U.S. for global media outlets. She also assisted in high-level State Department briefings and booked two dozen high-profile speakers for the 2012 Republican and Democratic National Conventions.

In the summer of 2011, Vicki worked at ABC News in New York City where she contributed to several episodes of 20/20, Primetime, Nightline, World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer and What Would You Do?, including 20/20's Emmy-nominated special program: "A Hidden America: Children of the Plains."

Vicki has also worked as a news intern at WOAI-TV, the NBC affiliate in San Antonio, and Asia Pacific Arts, an online arts and entertainment magazine published through USC’s US-China Institute.

Vicki's ATVN feature report about an urban barn helping underprivileged girls in Los Angeles was recognized with the 2013 Society of Professional Journalists' Mark of Excellence Award. She is a Region 11 finalist in the General Television Reporting category.

Vicki is also the recipient of the 2013 Alliance for Women in Media Scholarship, the 2013 Radio and Television News Association of Southern California Hal Fishman Memorial Scholarship, the 2012 Good News Foundation Leslie Miller Scholarship and the 2012 James Alan Cox Foundation Student Photojournalists Scholarship.

Vicki will graduate this May from USC with a degree in Broadcast and Digital Journalism with a double minor in International Relations and French. Vicki speaks Mandarin Chinese and French and loves traveling abroad.

After graduation, Vicki plans work as a general assignment reporter in local television. In the long term, she plans to report and field produce internationally, bringing global stories to American audiences. She also aspires to produce long-form documentary television for a news magazine program.

Vicki was born in Taipei, Taiwan and moved to the United States two years later. She considers herself a true Texas girl having spent most of her life in San Antonio. In addition to journalism, Vicki’s interests include exploring the outdoors, going on foodie adventures and practicing her photography skills on friends and family members.

Vicki’s favorite part of being a journalist is the opportunity to share in the most important moments in people’s lives. If you have a story to share, Vicki would love to hear from you!
