Student Affairs Issues Fountain Run Safety Guidelines
University officials issued safety guidelines for the 2013 Fountain Run, scheduled for Thursday at 10 p.m.
Graduating seniors are expected to begin the run at Hoover Street and Jefferson Blvd at the "Finger Fountain" and run through USC's 30 fountains. The annual tradition is a traditionally held during the final week of classes.
In an e-mail to undegraduate students Wednesday, USC Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Denzil J. Suite said:
"For the past few years, a small group of graduating seniors has participated in a fountain run around campus prior to the start of finals in the spring semester. This activity is not supported, condoned, or sponsored by the university. At best, this run is loosely organized for graduating seniors and typically takes place without significant incident or problems."
In past years, hundreds of students have participated in the Fountain Run.
As of Wednesday morning, the fountain between Bing Theatre and Norris Theatre was drained. Last year, water was drained from multiple fountains prior to the run. It is unclear how many other fountains will be drained.
In the e-mail, Suite advised students who chose to participate in the event to take "simple precautions to decrease your risk of injury, citation, or arrest."
- Please do not consume alcohol prior to or during the event.
- Please wear protective footwear at all times.
- Do not climb any fountains or attempt to enter any areas that are closed.
- Do not vandalize any property or bring open containers of alcohol.
- Do not bring any glass or breakable items in or near the fountains.
