UCLA Campus Goes Tobacco-Free

UCLA launched a tobacco-free policy, prohibiting the use of all tobacco products on university-owned property.

UCLA implemented a tobacco-free policy Monday prohibiting the use of all tobacco products on university-owned or leased property, both on and off campus.

The official tobacco-free launch was held on Earth Day, and all members of the community were invited to Bruin Plaza to participate in the celebration.

Chancellor Gene Block spoke at the event and those who attended could participate in giveaways and receive information about getting help to quit and control their cravings.

The California Smokers' Helpline and the Tobacco Control Division of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also hosted tables at the ceremony.

UCLA's policy is part of a UC-wide plan requiring all 10 campuses to become tobacco-free. The Westwood campus is the first to adopt the plan.

In January 2012, UC President Mark Yudof asked each UC Chancellor to carry out a smoke-free policy to be completed within 24 months.

"Tobacco Use is not permitted on any University Owned or Lease Property, including any portions of such Property that may have been previously designated smoking areas. The sale, advertising, promotion, or distribution of Tobacco Products is also prohibited on all University Owned or Leased Property," the Policy states.

The ban includes all forms of tobacco, such as cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookah, and e-cigarettes.

The policy's main goal is to maintain a safe and healthy environment for the entire UC community.
