Live Shots Are Always A Plus
This week was the first week a live shot was used for the newscast. This was exciting because I had a couple of places and events that I could have used for the live shot. There was a movie premiere, the end of a rally, and rain. What? Rain in southern California? You bet! Why not a live shot of rain? That’s what I did. For my first live shot, I decided for my weather anchor to do a live shot in the rain. Rain is always big news in southern California since it rains once in a while. So, the weather anchor did her weather segment and presented her story outside in the rain. It was a success!
Even though the live shot was a success, there are always challenges that arise when doing a live shot. Some of those challenges include wireless connection availability at the location of the live shot, microphone battery, and delay. Delay is the most challenging. It requires precise timing when an anchor tosses to the reporter who is in the live shot. That is why the studio practices a couple of times before going to these live shots. It’s essential to know the perfect timing when to toss to the reporter. When it’s all said and done, the live shot looks nice and adds another element to the newscast. Not all live shots work. That is why producers will have a backup story that one of the anchors will read if the live shot fails. Hopefully that will not happen often and the next live shots I choose will be as successful as my first one.
