End of the Semester Advice for Future Producers

I have learned so much in my semester as a producer at ATVN. The most obvious is that I learned how to produce a newscast. Aside from that I have learned about all the components that go into a newscast throughout the day, how to stay organized, and how to be cool under a lot of pressure.

Next semester there will be a new batch of producers taking over the show. My best advice for them is to pay attention. At the beginning of the semester when all of the workshops are being held, make sure to pay attention and take notes. These guidelines are essential to learning the basics of producing and will be really helpful as you begin your first week as a producer.

My next piece of advice is to do a lot of research the night before your first producing day. Having an idea of what is going on locally, nationally, and internationally in advance is great because you will be more familiar with all of the story ideas being proposed during the morning meeting.

It is so important to stay organized. Try not to take the 'learn as you go' approach to producing because those first few weeks will end up being really hectic and stressful. Stay very organized right from the start so you know who is working on what, what still needs to be done, and how you plan to accomplish the remainder of your tasks. This way, even as you're learning about producing during your first few weeks, you still are able to stay organized and on task.

To those producing next semester, best of luck! It is an unforgettable experience that prepares you so well for working at a news station when you graduate. You get to work with people who are just as passionate about broadcast journalism as you are and develop some great friendships.
