The Beauty of Convergence

Working in the new media center is always an ongoing adventure. With the incorporation of all different forms of media in a converged newsroom, it is a challenge to make sure everyone’s voice is heard amongst a crowd of people. I feel as if the newsroom has done a good job at accommodating everyone’s opinions so far, but we can always strive for more unity.

During the morning meetings, I have found time and time again that people are afraid to speak up. Even though the producers try to make sharing ideas a safe place in the newsroom, people just don’t seem to voice their story ideas enough. Usually, I have seen ATVN members share their ideas for stories along with a few people from ARN, but rarely do we hear from Neon Tommy.

I have told morning volunteers on my day that they should be familiar with all news before coming in for their shift. Even if that just means browsing the top stories on their phone, at least they would feel more involved and able to offer opinions on story ideas.

Personally, I try to do my part in the morning meetings by coming prepared with stories for my fellow team. I usually like to share 2-3 stories in the beginning to get the meeting going, and to inspire others to speak up. After doing this, I try to remain quieter until other people have had a chance to speak as well; however, if no one speaks up, I will continue sharing all my story ideas in order for us all to have a productive meeting.

In the future, I would like to set up a system that makes a point to hear from everyone, regardless of what section they are working for. This idea could be accomplished by taking turns with people from ATVN, ARN, and Neon Tommy in a cycle format, which would increase productivity.  Furthermore, I would like to hear more from ARN and Neon Tommy throughout the day, so that our stories can more seamlessly be shared.
