Producers

The End of the Beginning

TAGS:

What an experience this has been. Waking up on my first day to produce a live newscast roughly three months ago was terrifying to say the least; however, these past few months have greatly enhanced my journalistic knowledge in the realm of producing.

One of the key things I will take away with me, which I hope other producers do as well, is time management. Time in the news industry is something that is constantly taken for granted and misused. Producers are given a false sense of reality in the mornings when they arrive at the crack of dawn. At this time, it seems as if there is so much time left in the day; coincidentally, this can lead to the idea that you do not need to rush. Although rushing doesn’t always create good content, it is vital that you always are preparing or working on something throughout the day to ensure items do not pile up shortly before it is time to go live.

Additionally, as simple as it may sound, communication and teamwork are two things that must be in tune to allow the newscast to run with the fewest mistakes possible. Similarly to time management, when a producer gets busy it can be easy to not share information with the rest of your team. If this is the case, people can get confused and even begin to work on assignments that have already been completed. Due to this, hourly checkups with the rest of your producers, MJs, and anchors can help save your time and energy.

Working in the new media center has been a treat. Having the ability to both anchor and produce this semester to learn all of the ins and outs of the news station have tremendously helped my understanding of news in general. Many people underestimate the effect news can have on society. It is the privilege and duty for students studying journalism at USC to share what is happening and produce quality content around our campus. There has not been a day I came in for work that I have not felt extremely thankful to be able to play around with all of the amazing new technology we have been given, and I thoroughly look forward to seeing how ATVN progresses in the years to come.
