BREAKING NEWS: USC student killed in a hit-and-run accident
Officials are expected to release more information Monday morning about their investigation into the hit and run death of a 19-year-old female student.
The accident happened 3am Sunday in the crosswalk at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Hoover Street near campus.
Another student was critically injured. DPS says both students were taken to California Hospital.
USC officials have confirmed the name of the student who was killed is Adrianna Bachan. She was a freshman majoring in Environmental Studies, according to the USC Student Directory.
USC's Panhellenic Council confirms that Bachan was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.
USC officials have also confirmed the injured student is Marcus Garfinkle. He is an undeclared freshman, according to the directory. Lambda Chi president Cameron Kay tells ATVN that Garfinkle is a member of the fraternity.
LAPD says a man driving a small dark-colored car ran a red light and struck the the two students.
The Los Angeles Times reports the student was carried on the hood of the car for many feet before one of the passengers from the suspect car removed the student, and then fled the scene.
Bachan was pronounced dead at the hospital and Garfinkle is being treated for critical injuries. A spokesperson from California Hospital Medical Center tells ATVN that Garfinkle has stabilized and is undergoing an operation. An update on his condition is expected Monday.
DPS tells ATVN that the family members of both victims have been notified. Bachan was from Santa Barbara and Garfinkle is from Scottsdale, Arizona.
LAPD will release more information during a news conference Monday morning.
James Grant, director of USC's Media Relations, released a statement late Sunday about the incident. "We are all deeply saddened by this shocking incident, and out hearts go out to the families and friends of all of those touched by this tragedy. At this time, our student affairs officers are working with the families of the students involved, and offering counseling to those who knew them. Any other students affected by this event are asked to contact the student counseling office. We are working closely with LAPD in an effort to bring the person responsible to justice."
