USC Beats UCLA in College Ranking
USC placed higher than UCLA for the second straight year in the U.S. News & World Report's annual college ranking. USC maintained the same rank as last year, tying for 23rd with Carnegie Mellon. UCLA landed two spots behind at 25th. Harvard and Princeton share the first place spot.
Rankings are based on factors like the size of the college's endowment, SAT scores, and retention rates. USC scored especially high on retention and graduation rates, and received an overall score of 77 out of 100. U.S. News says that the formula they use to rank colleges is a reliable indicator of academic excellence. However, some academics feel that college listings are unscientific and misleading.
U.S. News started ranking colleges in 1983. Up until last year, UCLA had beaten USC every year in the rankings.
