The increase would make a full-time undergraduate's tuition $5,970 by the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. The increase would also add $618 to graduate students' tuition.
The CSU Board of Trustees Finance Committee first voted 4-3 for the approval. Then the CSU Board of Trustees finalized the decision.
The Finance Committee said the increase is necessary because of continued cuts in state funding, which has reportedly been decreased by $650 million in recent year. There might be another $100 million cut in the next month.
The board is expected to request an additional $138.3 million in state funding. However, this comes at a time when state officials are thinking about cutting funding from public education even more.
People continue to protest outside of the chancellor's office, that oversees the 23 different CSU campuses, in Long Beach.
ATVN's Alexis Zotos tweeted from the scene that protests are getting violent. A protester allegedly broke a glass door at the Board's office. Also, police are allegedly using pepper spray and two people have been taken into custody.
