USC Top School for International Students
USC was recognized as America's most multi-international university, after enrolling the most foreign students for the tenth year in a row.
The university enrolled 8,615 international students last year, 628 more than the previous year, according to a study called "Open Doors," which was released Monday.
UCLA came in at number six, having enrolled 6,249 international students last year.
The study found that the other top ten schools were: the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, New York University, Purdue University, Columbia University, Ohio State University, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Michigan State University and Harvard University.
International students at USC are not eligible for financial aid, and thus provide the university with an important stream of revenue.
USC has recruitment offices in key cities across the world, including Mumbai, Seoul, Taipei, Shanghai, and Mexico City.
School officials attribute the strong number of specifically Indian and Chinese recruits to a recruitment strategy that utilizes a strong alumni base in each of these key cities.
There has been a nation-wide rise in foreign students enrolling in US universities, the majority of which are graduate students focusing on degrees in the sciences or business.
At USC, about 70% of international students in fall 2010 were enrolled in graduate-level programs, the majority attending the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.
The Institute of International Education reported that 723,277 international students enrolled in American institutes of higher education this year, which is a 5% increase from last year.
China sent the most students at 158,000, 22% more than last year.
India sent the second largest group of students, followed by South Korea, Canada, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Vietnam, Mexico and Turkey, according to the report.
In response to those who feel that international students are getting spots over American students, the study found that international students account for a mere 4% of America's college population.
A diverse student body is one of the attributes that many American students consider when applying to American universities.
"USC's international students contribute tremendously to the university's vibrant community — and they benefit greatly in return," said President C. L. Max Nikias in a press release. "Our campuses hum with diversity, fresh perspectives and a broad range of experiences."
