2012 Pulitzer Prize Winners Announced

The year's winners in Journalism and Letters, Drama and Music have been released.

The recipients of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize were announced Monday, including a few surprises and two categories with no winner.

Journalists received the award in categories ranging from Public Service (for which the Philadelpha Inquirerer won) to Feature Photography (Craig F. Walker for The Denver Post). No prize was given for Editorial Writing.

The importance and usefulness of new and social media was recognized, especially in the award of Breaking News Reporting.

The news staff of The Tuscaloosa in Alabama won for their coverage of a tornado, using traditional media as well as mediums such as Twitter that allowed for real-time updates during the natural disaster.

The Huffington Post's David Wood also nabbed that news outlet's first Pulitzer, winning for his coverage of the struggles of soldiers who had fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

That theme was shared with another winner. Quiara Alegria Hudes won the award in Drama for her play "Water by the Spoonful," which examines the life of a veteran after he returns home.

An award for the Fiction category was withheld for the first time in 35 years -- a surprise to many in a year of highly qualified literature.

Manning Marable, who died just over a year ago, received the prize in History for his book Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention. Marable had worked on his book since the 1970s but did not live to see it published.

Among other winners were "Life on Mars" by Tracy K. Smith for poetry, Silent Night: Opera in Two Acts by Kevin Put, and Jeffrey Gettleman of the New York Times for international reporting.
