Viewers caught a glimpse of Whitney Houston’s final cinematic performance Monday during the trailer debut of “Sparkle,” a Supremes-inspired film, on the “Today” show.

The 1967 film remake features Houston as a mother of three aspiring vocalists who form a trio and struggle with drugs and addiction.

Houston, who died in Februrary after her own battle with drug abuse, was approached to perform in “Sparkle” 20 years after her defining film portrayl in “The Bodyguard.”  She also served as an executive producer of “Sparkle.”

“I think we will see a lot of truth in her performance when we watch it,” Kathie Lee Gifford, co-host of the fourth hour of “Today" said.

The brief trailer displayed the daughters in performance and Houston telling them, "I always knew you had the gift." No drug references were evident, nor was Houston seen singing.

"Sparkle" is scheduled for release Aug. 17.
