Subaru, Ford Recall a Combined 270,000 Vehicles
Two major car manufacturers recalled thousands of vehicles Thursday.
Subaru of America recalled over 47,000 remote-start cars because the key fob can malfunction and start the engine accidentally. Ford recalled 230,000 minivans whose third row seats can come loose from rust.
The Subaru key fobs can start the engine of recalled cars and SUVs if dropped, according to the company. The vehicle runs for 15 minutes and then shuts off, but it can continue to start and stop itself until the car runs out of gas or the key runs out of battery.
Subaru has not reported any injuries related to the malfunction, but if the car is parked in a garage, it can cause a dangerous carbon monoxide build up.
Subaru has also had to recall several models, including some 2010-2013 Legacy and Outback cars, 2012 and 2013 Imprezas and the 2013 XV Crosstrek.
Subaru dealers say they will replace the key fobs free of charge. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQF-42.
Ford says the glitch in its cars has not caused any crashes or injuries either.
The company is recalling 2004 through 2007 Ford Freestars and Mercury Montereys, but only from cold-weather states. Dealers say they will install new seat mounting brackets and panels to prevent water from getting to the frame and causing rust.
