DPS Annual Security Report Shows Mixed Results
According to USC's Department of Public Safety new Annual Security Report, burglaries both on and off University Park Campus were down 30 percent, with 66 reported incidents in 2012 compared to 110 cases in 2011.
However, the DPS report released Monday night found that cases of personal assault increased last year. Forcible sex offenses were up by 24 percent with 41 recorded incidents last year and 33 cases in 2011. Aggravated assaults were up 41 percent with 17 reported in 2012 and 12 cases in 2011.
The responsibility for personal safety does not and cannot rest primarily with the university or our public safety department," said President Max Nikias. "Rather, it rests primarily with you and me as individuals."
"I honestly feel that DPS is non-existent and I don't really feel their presence, yah know, night life or on campus," explained Senior Jacqueline Wachtel. "I do feel their presence when they chase me down when I'm riding my bike."
"I like seeing them around," said Junior Barbara Blumenthal. "I live north of campus and I have a couple night classes, so it makes me feel better seeing them hanging out at night."
