Crack Down on Greek Row
USC's administration banned activities during weekdays after a student from Loyola Marymount University was seriously injured at a Sigma Alpha Epsilon Party last Thursday.
Seven other USC students were also taken to the hospital this past weekend for possible alcohol poisoning.
The school will only allow students to throw parties from Friday to Sunday, if they are approved by administration. Students will have to obtain city permits and show USC IDs.
"Social events at the fraternity will be prohibited until the matter is resolved," said Ainsley Carry, the Vice Provost for Student Affairs. "Student Affairs is working with the chapter's national office to coordinate a response and possible disciplinary action."
The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council said in a statement "policies will remain in place until they can fully evaluate the safety and risk management policies of all chapters."
"The trends this semester in alcohol related incidents are not promising and therefore SCampus policy will be unconditionally adhered to," the council added.
"Sadly, it takes events like this to force them to re-evaluate," said Charles Johnson, a member of the Greek system. "Hopefully, finally they'll be able to get things under control."
"If we're going to parties, you know, you shouldn't be getting hospitalized," said party goer Ashley Velez.
