A New Kind of Affordable Housing Coming to El Monte

Construction has begun for mixed-use development in El Monte.

The City of El Monte broke ground Thursday on a new apartment complex that will offer affordable housing to people with low socioeconomic standing.

The Gateway Project will include 485 units of housing, of which 132 will be considered "afforable units." This project will also bring 25,000 square feet of retail space to the area.

A $15-million grant will help upgrade infrastructure and surrounding streets to give the neighborhood a massive overhaul.

The Gateway Project will be built at 3535 Santa Anita Avenue, next to the El Monte Metro Bus Station, which was built in 2012.

The construction is being funded by the City of El Monte, Grapevine Advisors, LLC and Jamboree Housing Corporation.
