"Shamrock Shake" Felt Across LA
Many Southern California residents woke up to a jolt on St. Patrick's Day when a 4.4-magnitude earthquake rattled the Los Angeles area Monday morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey originally estimated the quake at magnitude-4.7. It was centered about six miles north-northwest of Westwood and about five miles underground.
Mayor Eric Garcetti said Monday's shake served as a reminder that "every L.A. family must be prepared with food, water and other essentials, as well as a plan."
Metro rail lines were delayed briefly after the quake as crew members inspected tracks for possible damage.
LAX operations and Los Angeles Unified School District schools were unaffected.
