Lakers Head Coach Mike D'Antoni Resigns
The Los Angeles Lakers announced on Wednesday that Mike D'Antoni has resigned as the Lakers head coach. D'Antoni is stepping down despite being under contract for the 2014-2015 season.
D'Antoni previously coached the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, and New York Knicks. D'Antoni replaced Mike Brown in 2012 and finished the 2014 season with a 27-55 record, which was the worst record held in franchise history.
"Given the circumstances, I don't know anybody could have done a better job than Mike did the past two seasons," said Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak.
D'Antoni had a 67-87 record during his tenure as the LA basketball team's head coach. He is the Lakers' fourth head coach in less than three years.
"On behalf of the Lakers, we thank Mike for the work ethic, professionalism and positive attitude that he brought to the team every day. We wish him the best of luck."
D'Antoni leaves the Lakers with a career record of 455-426. Although the Lakers have not set a timetable, the search for D'Antoni's replacement will begin immediately.
