Memorial for Grad Student Calls for Better Security
Hundreds of students, USC faculty, family and community members gathered to remember 24-year-old engineering student Xinran Ji Friday afternoon.
USC Provost Elizabeth Garrett offered her deepest condolences from the university and read a poem in honor of Xinran Ji, who she said was, “an inspiration.”
“He made his family and our academic community very proud. An excellent student in engineering, he was an innovator and future leader in his profession,” she said.
Xinran’s uncle and a friend of the family spoke of Xinran as a caring man who loved photography. Members of the Chinese community at USC and in Los Angeles said they are standing together for better safety so something like this never happens again.
“We urge the University of Southern California and LAPD to take further measures which will ensure the safety and security of every student here at the university,” said Chinese Consulate General Lei Wang.
Xinran was just 24 years old when he was killed July 24th. A scholarship will be started in his honor for graduate students from Asia.
