Sports SCene: Football Loses; Alicia Ogoms In-Studio

The Sports SCene crew breaks down the USC football team's trip to Tempe and guest Alicia Ogoms joins the conversation in-studio.

On this week’s episode of Sports SCene, hosts Connor McGlynn and Jodee Storm Sullivan dive into the issues surround No. 19 USC football’s 41-31 loss to No. 21 Stanford Saturday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

McGlynn dissects the problem by focusing on the defense’s inability to provide enough pressure and disrupting the passing game which opened up the Cardinal’s run attack, while Sullivan assures Trojan fans that even with the early season loss, USC is still in the running for the College Football Playoff.

Looking forward to the Trojan’s trip to Tempe, Arizona to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils, Paolo Uggetti helps decipher which team will have the advantage at pivotal match-ups between the offensive skill players, secondarys and the all-encompassing coaching staffs. Uggetti is primed to give USC the upper hand in two of the three categories and delivers his final score prediction for the duel in the desert.

Still sore from a heartbreaking last second 38-34 loss to ASU in last year’s PAC-12 battle on a hail mary to wide receiver Jalen Strong, Jackson Safon asked students to relive their emotions from that brisk October night.

Keely Eure then breaks down everything there is to know about the atmosphere the Trojans will be facing in their first road test of the season. Eure gives a unique take on the renovated Sun Devil Stadium and how the extreme heat will play a part in the match-up.

Every athlete has their own superstitions and rituals to go through before each game and many adjust them when on the road. Sports SCene's Beverly Pham caught up with a few of the USC football players after practice Tuesday to ask them about their habits away from home.

Switching from the gridiron to the hardwood, Sullivan breaks down the early season success of the USC women’s volleyball team with Cooper Perkins. The duo discuss just how talented the 12-0 Women of Troy are and what the key players, like three consecutive PAC-12 Player of the Week award winner senior Samantha Bricio, need to do in order to power the team to another postseason performance.

Senior middle blocker Alicia Ogoms joined the Sports SCene crew in studio to talk with McGlynn about her comfortability in taking on more of a leadership role with such a young roster. Ogoms, who grew up in a highly talented athletic family, also joked about being able to branch out from her basketball playing parents and pick up volleyball while getting into some heated competition during family game nights.

Finally, Hailey Tucker examines the standout weekend performances from USC’s women’s tennis team and soccer team, as they both went undefeated on the road. The doubles pair of senior Giuliana Oleos and sophomore Gabby Smith took home the gold in a dominating performance at the Oracle/ ITA Masters in Malibu, California, overtaking No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 9 Kentucky. The Women of Troy soccer team got out of its offensive slump en route to knocking off Pacific, 3-1, and Saint Mary’s, 2-0.

Make sure to tune into next week’s show as the Sports SCene crew brings you highlights from the USC football game against Arizona State and the women’s soccer team’s clash with Oregon State.
