According to Iran's state news agency, two Americans were released from a Tehran prison after being in custody for over two years.

The agency would not say where or who the hikers were released to. However, a senior American official told CNN that the hikers were released from Iran and are now in the hands of Omani officials. Once they reached Oman, they were greeted by their families. They are expected to make their way back home to the United States after leaving Oman.

According to CNN, Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer were released on bail for $500,000 each from Iran's Evin prison.

Bauer and Fattal, both 29, were convicted of entering Iran illegally and spying on behalf of the United States last month. Each were senetneced to eight years in prison with bail.

They were arrested with another hiker, Sarah Shourd, who was freed a year ago for medical purposes, for apparently crossing an unmarked border between Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran. The hikers said that they accidently veered off a dirt road while hiking and sight-seeing.

The hikers' release comes a day before Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scheduled to speak at the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
