Gov. Brown Rallies Support for Prop 30
Governor Jerry Brown spoke at Cal State Los Angeles Tuesday to rally for Proposition 30.
If passed, the proposition would increase the current sales tax by a quarter-cent on the dollar over the next four years and raise the income tax for those with annual earnings over $250,000 dollars.
The revenue would also increase the minimum guarantee for public schools and community colleges under a previous measure passed in 1998, Prop 98.The money will also go into a new state Education Protection Account. 89 percent of the money in the new account will be distributed to schools from kindergarten through 12th grade while the other 11 percent would go to community colleges.
Each school district would also receive a minimum of $200 per student and each community college district would get at least $100 for every full time student in funds from the new account. This proposition would generate another $6 billion from 2012-2013 to 2016-17 fiscal years in state tax revenues. Smaller amounts will be generated in the following years.
Brown calls the measure "modest, fair and temporary."
Opponents of prop 30 fear it would hurt small business and job creation. Some also believe education should be a higher prority in the state budget and Brown and the Legislature should make it their priority instead of raising taxes.
