Pacoima Families Save for College

Low-income families get help with financial education for college.

More than 100 families were honored in Pacoima Tuesday after completing a financial education program run by the Youth Policy Institute and Citi Community Development.

"Families Save: College Bound Savings Program," is designed to help low-income families with children in middle and high school prepare financially for college.

The "Families Save" program is part of the Los Angeles Promise Neighborhood initiative launched by President Obama. The YPI is the lead agency for L.A. Promise Neighborhood and was awarded a $30 million grant  by the U.S. Department of Education in December 2012, according to its website

"My daughter wants to go to Stanford, so we have to start preparing and start saving," Miriam Mane, parent, said. "Get educated, get prepared."
